EDMONTON – A man and a woman are dead following a three-vehicle collision northeast of Edmonton earlier this week.
Around 2 p.m. Monday, St. Paul RCMP were called to the collision on Highway 28, just east of the Mallaig turnoff, which is about 30 kilometres north of St. Paul.
Police say an SUV was heading east on the highway when it crossed the centre line, colliding with a westbound travel trailer. The SUV then collided with a westbound minivan which was behind the trailer.
The minivan ended up in the north ditch where it caught on fire.
Passing motorists quickly jumped to help, pulling a 12-year-old girl from the burning vehicle. Two other people who were inside the burning vehicle were unable to escape.
The 49-year-old man driving the vehicle and his 52-year-old female passenger died in the collision.
The 27-year-old woman driving the SUV and the 12-year-old girl were taken to hospital in St. Paul. They were both then airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to an Edmonton hospital.
The four people who were inside the truck pulling the travel trailer were not injured in the collision.
RCMP is not releasing the names of the victims at this time.
