MONTREAL – Mordecai Richler’s hometown will mark the 10th anniversary of his death by naming a gazebo in his honour.
The City of Montreal will officially rename it the pavillon Mordecai-Richler at a ceremony next week.
The outspoken writer, who frequently sparred with Quebec nationalists, died of cancer on July 3, 2001.
The Mont Royal Park gazebo is also intended to serve as a speaker’s corner where people can sound off.
The structure is close to the neighbourhood where the controversial Richler grew up, an area made famous in some of his best-selling books.
But the dilapidated building is also in need of repair.
The City of Montreal says it plans to renovate the gazebo before next summer.
This is the second honour bestowed upon the literary icon this week, after Canada’s Walk of Fame announced it will enshrine Richler’s name on a Toronto sidewalk.
