BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The body of singer Facundo Cabral has been returned to his native Argentina.

Cabral’s coffin arrived in a Mexican Air Force jet from Guatemala on Tuesday. That is fitting since Cabral spent much of his vagabond life in Mexico. His widow and nephew joined foreign minister Hector Timerman to receive his remains.

Cabral was shot to death in an attack Timerman says was apparently directed at Cabral’s Nicaraguan concert promoter. That man is hospitalized and in no condition yet to testify about what happened.

Timerman says Cabral’s coffin will be displayed for the public in a theatre in Buenos Aires before being cremated at La Chacarita, a cemetery where Carlos Gardel and many other historic Argentine figures are buried.
