EDMONTON – Animal Care and Control officers have seized a pit bull after the animal allegedly attacked and killed another dog in north Edmonton Saturday afternoon.
Officers were called to a home in the area of 121 St. and 131 Ave. around 1:30 p.m.
Chantelle Forrester, 21, says she was outside with her Shih Tzu, Oreo, when she saw a pit bull walking up a nearby alley.
Forrester says at first, the pit bull seemed friendly and tried to play with Oreo, but then the pit bull tried to get into the woman’s backyard.
“I was pushing it away, kind of making sure it didn’t go in the backyard. And I sat there and I was petting the dog and, of course, my little Shih Tzu, Oreo, was being protective and kind of growled.”
That’s when the pit bull attacked, according to Forrester.
“The pit bull grabbed him by the neck and was throwing him around… and pretty much threw him around like a rag doll,” she explained. “And once the pit bull grabbed him by the neck I was hitting the pit bull, trying to get him off, wouldn’t get off so I kicked him, still wouldn’t let him go.”
She called her stepbrother and stepdad for help and eventually they were able to free Oreo from the pit bull’s grasp.
Animal Care and Control was called in and is now leading the investigation.
James Johnson, a spokesperson with Animal Care and Control, says officers are working with the pit bull’s owners, who recently adopted the dog. Johnson says the pit bull has been tested and appears to be decent with people. The dog has since been returned to its owners.
Animal Care and Control will continue to monitor the owners’ care capabilities.
