First day of Summer 2011 in Canada: June 21

VANCOUVER – The first day of summer in Canada this year is June 21, and even though the weather has been more like a chilly spring lately, it is set to improve in B.C. over the next few days, but could cool down again by the end of the week.

According to Global BC weather on Monday, June 20, the temperatures could reach a high of 22-degrees in the Vancouver area on Wednesday, but it could get colder again in time for the weekend.

The first day of summer is also known as the Summer Solstice, and in the northern hemisphere it is the longest day of the year, when the sun is farthest north.

Space.com writes that the Summer Solstice will officially begin at 17:16 Universal Time, and at the same time Winter officially begins for the Southern Hemisphere.
