Veteran photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus was shot and killed in Afghanistan on Friday.
A longtime photographer for The Associated Press, the 48-year-old from Germany was on assignment in the country to cover this weekend’s presidential election.
Niedringhaus and her Canadian colleague, AP reporter Kathy Gannon, were sitting in their vehicle when an Afghan policeman shot them with an AK-47.
They had been travelling with a convoy of election workers near the city of Khost, not far from the Pakistan border.
Gannon, who suffered three gunshot wounds, survived the attack. Niedringhaus, according to the AP, died instantly.
The two women worked together regularly.
“Kathy Gannon’s writing on Afghanistan helped shape my mental map of the country, and Anja Niedringhaus’ pictures helped illustrate it,” Canadian Press journalist Stephanie Levitz said Friday.
In memory of her life and work, here are some of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist’s images.
