Oliver residents fight back against flooding

Some South Okanagan neighbourhoods are still under several feet of water after the level of Okanagan River pushed past its normal limit.

George de Melo of Oliver says the river is four feet above normal and the neighbourhood is seeing its worst flooding in nearly 15 years.

De Melo is helping his neighbours pump the excess water out of their properties.

He says one neighbour is using a canoe to get from her house to the garage.

Another neighbour’s backyard is under three feet of water.

De Melo is working an extra nine hours a day to keep the water at bay.

The elevated river level is due to the recent heavy rainfall and a big snowpack in the mountains.
