TAMPA, Florida — Legendary wrestler (Macho Man) Randy Savage was killed Friday in a car accident, after suffering an apparent heart attack.
He was 58.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Savage’s 2009 Jeep Wrangler crossed a raised concrete median and drove through oncoming traffic before hitting a tree about 9:25 ET Friday morning.
He was transported to Largo Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Police believe he had "suffered a medical event" prior to the crash, but it won’t be confirmed until an autopsy is performed.
Savage’s brother, Lanny Poffo, told TMZ.com that this brother, whose real name is Randy Mario Poffo, suffered a heart attack before losing control of his vehicle.
Savage’s wife, 56-year-old Barbara Poffo, suffered minor injuries and was sent to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Savage joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1985 and became one of the most famous professional wrestlers of all time. He left the WWF in 1994 and signed with rival World Championship Wrestling, where he remained until 1999.
He left the wrestling scene for five years, joining Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in 2004.
He retired in 2005.
