When a snap election is called, at least one side would normally be prepared.
But that hasn’t been the case in British Columbia, resulting in a provincial election campaign like no other, political watchers say.
The campaign has seen interim B.C. Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson going without media availabilities on several days, including on Tuesday and Wednesday in the home stretch, ahead of Saturday’s final voting day.
The NDP has meanwhile pivoted its messaging from focusing on U.S. President Donald Trump, to affordability, to the need for a stable majority.
And campaigning has also been notably muted with relatively few large-scale rallies, although both major parties have events scheduled this week.
Even the NDP campaign bus, which was adorned with Eby’s smiling face in 2024, is an anonymous-looking coach, devoid of slogans.
Hamish Telford, an associate professor of political science at the University of the Fraser Valley, said he had noticed the “lack of preparation.”
“This is especially surprising since the NDP called this election. You would think, if they were going to call a snap election, that they at least would be prepared, and that they would obviously catch the Conservatives off guard,” said Telford.
“This was an election of their making, and they are not entirely ready for it,” he added.

Telford said the NDP had initially been anticipating Eby running against Kerry-Lynne Findlay, a divisive and unpopular leader of the Conservatoves. But Findlay resigned and was replaced by Doerkson.
Eby called the snap election anyway.
Telford said he would have advised the NDP not to go through with it.
“They should have called the election off, but evidently things were too late, or they had built up too much momentum and couldn’t stop themselves.” said Telford.
Angelo Isidorou, who is chief strategist for the Conservatives, said snap elections can be messy compared with fixed-date polls.
“In this case, this is what makes this very unique … not only is it a snap election, but it was an election that took place at the same time as municipal elections, which never happens. So, it was all very chaotic,” said Isidorou of the Oct. 17 municipal polls across B.C.
He said the “biggest difference” between a snap election and a fixed-date election is the “predictability.”
“It’s difficult being in Opposition because you don’t know when the election is going to come, and when an election is called, you only have maybe over a week to recruit candidates and get them on the ballot because there’s a deadline. When there’s a fixed election, you can predict all of this,” said Isidorou.
“In this case, it wasn’t, and I think what surprised me the most is really how not prepared the NDP was,” said Isidorou, adding that otherwise, the NDP would have fielded a full slate of 93 candidates in every riding.
Elections BC said the NPD was one short of a full slate, after failing to nominate a representative in Peace River North.
But vetting may have suffered in the rush to field candidates.
While the Conservatives managed to fill their 93-riding slate, two candidates have since been disavowed by the party.
Jordan McIntosh, the 18-year-old former Conservative candidate for Vancouver-Strathcona, was dumped last Thursday over online posts that included saying Hitler killed “lots of Jews” not because he “hated them specifically” but because there were so many of them.
Another candidate, Joachim Agou, was ejected from the party earlier this month for online comments saying the driver of a car that rammed a pro-Palestinian protest group in Switzerland should have “reversed too.”
Political scientist Michael Prince said the election has “elements of some really unusual features.”
He said it was puzzling to see parties still fall into the trap of recruiting inappropriate candidates.
“They haven’t really thoroughly vetted their history of social media posts,” said Prince, the Lansdowne professor emeritus of social policy at the University of Victoria.
“We’ve seen, particularly on the Conservative side, candidates that have been removed by the leader or have stepped down very quickly,” he said. “So, that’s kind of the new unusual, but it’s been something that’s unfortunately pretty typical over the last several elections.”
JV remember this?!?
Here is what Delgamuukw v. British Columbia (December 1997) didn’t do.
* No Declaration of Title: The court did not actually grant or declare Aboriginal title for the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en people, ordering a new trial instead—a retrial that was never held, leaving ownership of the territory unresolved.
* Burden of Proof Remains High: Proving exclusive pre-sovereignty occupation across vast, shared territories is difficult and is still contested between tribes.
* Crown Sovereignty Unquestioned: British/Crown sovereignty is a given, subordinating Aboriginal title beneath underlying Crown title
* Infringement The ruling stated that the Crown can still infringe upon Aboriginal title for “compelling and substantial legislative objectives”
What it really comes down to is how much the government will willing to bend over.
What can be voted in can be voted out .
Doug Brekfaust is always Doug Brekfaust. Suffix or Prefix added the Doug Brekfaust’s name and message is always there.
Play your childish game copycat games JV it won’t stop me posting.
One thing I never had to do the last time a Conservative/Liberal and even Horgans NDP government were in charge was using a credit card for groceries. Since Eby, its been a used more times than I’d care to.
Just because everyone else here is smarter than me, has more money, has better jobs, has had girlfriends/boyfriends, has parents that haven’t tried to poison them, etc doesn’t mean I’m a total loser. I mean, I am a loser, but not a total loser.

The copycat troll is right. I’m so triggered I’ve already begun punching the bathroom stalls at work (McDonald’s). After the NDP loses I’m going to fist every chug on Hastings. Then I’ll probably stop by the Capilano reserve and do my “hey-ya-hey-ya-hey-ya!” I always get a kick out of that one.

The NDP and Eby are getting their azzes handed to them, and they’re the ones who called the election and thought they were being smart.
Too funny!! Bye bye, lying Eby!
Time for the NDP to go. In 1981 the NDP
was just like it is now, oppressing the elderly, the disable and the down of their luck. I had just fallen down a mountain near Oliver B.C. IN order to get financial help the NDP told me I had to do job search forms meanwhile I was on crutches
it was snowing out and they made me come in.
So I walked 2 miles uphill with my crutches in the snow upa steep hill starting at the PNE and had to come in a see an NDP social services lady
who saw my crutches and said you still have to fill at job search forms even though their wrere no jobs due to the 1981 recession in B.C. where
over a hundred people would line up to try and apply for a minimum wage dis washing job.
So I had to fake a job search on the form just so I could get 120 dollars to buy food for the month.
NOw its the 2020s and they are just as bad harrasing my wife and myself so we had to beg for PWD assistance each month by saying we have to review your file every month at a board meeting. S0 glad we are on OAS now. The NPD
need to go so seniors can get the help they need without being harressed with red tape by some NDP lackie.
How to trigger an inbred NAZl troll on the internet = Say you play golf 😂😂
I prefer black and native men. Whiteboys have such small c0cks
Hi Naomi, I was just at Capilano area too, getting blowjobs myself, from the chugs on the reservation there. Damn those squaws are in rough shape. It’s too bad they’re never getting off the reserve. Maybe DRIPA would have helped that but the NDP is losing, so….
“Conservatoves”
These AI generated articles are getting out of control. Affordability? What can any province do for any of it’s citizens, when the problem is federal LPC taxes?
It was a decision driven by an incompetent NDP government. Irresponsible, inept and corrupt. Plain and simple.
I’ll be out back of the Walmart at Capilano mall allday today giving blowjobs to anyone that will vote OneBC. Donations will also be accepted! No seriously I could really use the money…
Hey guys this is Naomi Chocyk! OneBC Candidate for West Vancouver- Capilano. I just wanted to let everyone know that I love AdoIf HitIer!!

You seem to be living in some sort of alternate reality where the NDP already lost. Unless you’re so stupid that you think Ipsos polls are the actual election? Hmm well I think you’ve already answered that question 🤣
It’s obvious the NDP called this election because the Conservatives just ousted their leader and they thought it was their best chance to get a couple more years of work. The NDP know they haven’t been doing a good job running the province, so they seized the opportunity, even when they aren’t prepared and have a terrible track record themselves. They obviously don’t think the people of BC are very smart, it’s an insult to us all. If they win, it won’t be a majority, they will lose seats. Then if Eby has even a shred of integrity, he will admit his mistakes and step down.
“This is especially surprising since the NDP called this election. You would think, if they were going to call a snap election, that they at least would be prepared,..”
There’s a reason every poll has the NDP losing badly on Saturday. It’s because they suck, and Eby is an opportunistic loser who can’t run on any kind of record so he’s resorted to attack ads and another million fake promises. The party deserves what’s coming to them.
Dear Bob, it’s Eby and the NDP that are crying.

I hope the NDP are decimated.
Well, the only way your headline makes sense is to assume David Eby is dumb as he called the election so if they are not prepared, that’s on Eby and the NDP.
For everyone else, it was not a scheduled election, is was an opportunistic strategy meant to catch his opponents off guard.
another 4 years of eby and his tax and spend clowns would ruin BC, vote blue
Looks like the author of the article was not ready either. Some proofreading/ error checking would help your journalistic credibility.
I hope the NDP win a minority. Eby should have never called an election.
Even funnier I spend every day of my sad and pathetic life on the internet crying about David Eby and DRIPA. 😂
Because All About Me Comrade Eby called it. Vote the NDP mess out now!
I think the funniest thing was that after Eby call the snap election, at least 5 NDP incumbents, including two of his most prominent elite ministers chickened out and drop out of the election. 😂
Why hasn’t Niki Sgarma been dumped for her racist comments? Huh!
Because Eby is a moron and will get what he deserves! Down he goes!
BC’s best days are just ahead!
Canada is now planning to nationalize it’s oil. Surprise surprise, Alberta, there goes your oil! The country is also planning on bringing in 15 million more Asian immigrants into its country and the nation is headed toward half of its population being foreign born .
