Surrey is shaping up to be a major battleground in the upcoming provincial election and now B.C.’s two biggest parties are expressing support for expanding the SkyTrain to Newton.
The city’s newly elected mayor, Doug McCallum, said in a statement that only the BC Conservatives have committed to the expansion, while the BC NDP “offered a meeting.”
One of McCallum’s campaign promises was to connect Newton on the SkyTrain line.
Eby was asked about the mayor-elect’s comments during a press conference on Tuesday morning.
“It’s important for British Columbians to know that whether it’s our commitment to work with the new mayor in Surrey, to build that SkyTrain in Newton, or whether it is the Massey Tunnel Project in the Lower Mainland, or whether it’s right here in Kelowna, to build up that sixth floor of the hospital, that we’re building this province,” Eby said.
He added that the BC NDP has set aside $250 million in their platform for a transit expansion to Newton and they have set that money aside.

“There’s actually money in our costed platform to expand SkyTrain to Newton,” Eby said.

BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson did not hold a media availability on Tuesday, but in a press release said that under Eby, Newton has been left off the map when it comes to rapid transit.
“Families in Newton shouldn’t have to keep waiting on promises that never get delivered,” said Doerkson. “This community has been patient for far too long. I’m committing to this project now, and a Conservative government will build it on time and on budget.”
Doerkson said Newton will “finally get the rapid transit it deserves.”

This is a stupid idea. Newton is nowhere big enough to warrant SkyTrain. It’s almost as if the city of Surrey can’t throw away money fast enough. Newton doesn’t have the land to support enough business for SkyTrain and even if they did Surrey doesn’t need another restaurant. 40% of businesses in Surrey are restaurants and drinking places and another 30% are gas stations. Surrey is putting their cart in front of their horse
Also had a post removed. Bad global very bad shame on you guys!
First Newton then White Rock and South Surrey. If we weren’t in a trade war with the US, then maybe even possibly fulfill that Peach Arch News article from April’s Fools from some 20 yrs ago (If I remember correctly) where the Skytrain goes through the Peace Arch and into Blaine. Of course, with any major project, there needs to be money to pay for it. The middle class can’t afford it or the poor and we all know most political parties won’t tax the rich or corporations as they fear they will loose all that political bribing, sorry, the correct term is political donations they get from them.
They already have rapidbus to Newton. What do they need skytrain for. What we need is rapidbus all the way up King George to highway 99.
@fred
Yeah but the newcomers mostly live in Surrey and we’re gonna be bringing in millions more and they need the transit
removed my post! Thanks Global!
whoa. get in line Surrey, or are 6 bridges and 2 skytrain not enough of a transit fix for you. The North Shore is suffering badly from infrastructure neglect and we need TWO new bridges and a skytrain line before you get any more gravy.
