The Conservative Party of Canada is urging the federal government to release the full details of the proposed U.S. deal that prompted Canada to walk away from trade negotiations.
Shuvaloy Majumdar, the party’s critic for Canada-U.S. relations, wrote to Dominic LeBlanc on Sunday asking for details while underscoring his party’s support in fighting for tariff-free trade.
“I am requesting that your government release the full details of the proposed deal from which you chose to walk away on Friday evening,” Majumdar wrote. “If there was a draft text of any agreement that both governments have seen, please release it. The U.S. administration has seen it. Your government has seen it. Canadians deserve to see it.”
Carney withdrew his negotiators late Friday after he said the U.S. “asked too much and offered too little,” but the exact details of what was offered remains limited.
During a news conference on Saturday, Carney there were several outstanding problems Canada had when talks stalled.
That included issues with the levels of auto tariffs, such as which vehicle types would be excluded from a deal, a last-minute addition of restrictions on Canada’s ability to strike free trade deals and efforts targeting French language and Quebec culture.

Some sources with knowledge of the talks that were held earlier this week told Global News discussions included lowering steel and aluminum duties to 25 per cent and auto tariffs to 15 per cent. Carney had also told premiers to prepare to return U.S. alcohol to store shelves, a sticking point for President Donald Trump. That won’t be happening now due to the suspension of trade talks.
But there are still many other elements not yet known, including what either side may have proposed in those final hours.
“They (Canadians) remain in the dark on the circumstances in which tariffs would have been lifted on many Canadian exports on which millions of jobs depend,” Majumdar said.
The MP for Calgary Heritage acknowledged the government did not provide details previously “so as not to tip its hand” to U.S. negotiators, but with talks stalled he said those concerns “no longer apply in this situation.”
He criticized Carney, saying the prime minister had made “roughly a half-dozen major concessions” before heading to the bargaining table.
“We are here to help and fight for a good result for Canadians,” Majumdar wrote. “But we expect the Prime Minister to be transparent and open with the Canadian people about what the President offered and/or threatened in these talks.”
Global News has reached out to the federal government for comment on the Conservatives’ call for details.
The federal government has seen broad support by politicians of all party lines since the decision was made to walk away. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Saturday expressed disappointment the U.S. had chosen to levy more tariffs.
He added his party did not want a bad deal.
“Canada cannot accept one-sided tariffs that will deindustrialize our country. Nor can we accept a bad deal. Instead, we must continue the fight for tariff-free trade,” Poilievre wrote on social media.
Carney has promised to levy “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs to match Trump’s 50 per cent duties in industries such as steel and dairy.
Those counter-tariffs are expected to take effect Sept. 8, the day after Labour Day.
Here’s what happened.
Carney marched in on Trump like Captain Canada.Trump stood up and Carney turtle.Trump told him to sign the deal and get American booze back on the shelves.
Carney crawled out from under a chair, signed the deal with a quivering hand and crawled backwards out of Trump office while thanking him profusely.
When Carney returned to Canada ,he did as instructed, telling the Premiers to load the shelves.
When the Premiers found out what really happened they told Carney to cancel the deal or they will blow the lid off his weakness.
@ Northern Nelly – It’s not hard to believe. Have you ever heard of bait and switch? The Canadians say that the US inserted the offending language at the 11th hour. Based on what Carney says the deal breakers are it makes sense that they were not there on Thursday – the subordination of our international trade and tariff levels to the US is an insane ask.
Trumps trade war with Canada, the EU and the rest of the world is just to try and distract the American people from his disastrous military adventure in the Middle East…Iran has America by the balls…the US will lose this “war” like they’ve lost all their other wars…Canadians survived the Great Depression in the 1930’s and we’ll survive Trumps term in the Oval Office…
Let’s get the timeliness right.
Last Tuesday, negotiations were extended by 3 days by both parties as a deal was close.
On Thursday Dominic LeBlanc said they had a deal with just some details to be worked out.
Then on Friday night, Carney pulls the plug citing major issues for sovereignty and Quebec culture.
So, those issues didn’t exist on Thursday but did on Friday?
That’s hard to believe.
And Greer said today that Carney seemed to have domestic political issues behind his termination of the deal.
Politics over economics. That’s the Carney way.
PP and the few conservatives that support him are a non-entity. Canadians don’t want to be groveling at the big orange turd’s feet.
Libs will not release this. It was about protecting Ontario and qubek and throwing the rest of us under the bus.
Details now! Canadians should know ALL that was being asked.
The TDS nuts can kiss it. We need a real leader like Trump to prosper, Canada is failing.
The Conservatives represent the U.S.A. in Canada. Pierre will do anything the Dotard asks for. These are nor real Conservatives, they are Steven Harper’s religious Reform Party in a new dress. They are encouraging Alberta’s separation from Canada so should not be trusted with inside information.
Yeah, not gonna happen. Transparency isn’t a liberal core value. It is hard to run spoils on a country while being transparent.
Carney needs to pass a temp emergency law to take control of our natural resources from the provinces particularly Alberta.
The oil taps need to be turned off immediately, but Smith is a traitor to Canada.
Carney is just making excuses as after a year he still has not kept his campaign promises. Getting a deal with the USA, instead he walks away like a coward.
Thank you for standing strong, PM Carney. I trust you to do the right thing for our country!
@Biny . Carney is not “Canada”. He has thee passports and he barely lived in Canada the last 20 years. His children go to American Universities. Carney owns a home in the USA.
Hey Biny, the only critical comments I see here are about Carney and the Lost Liberal Decade. None are critical of Canada.
The typical mini MAGA Poilievre conservative supporters are out spewing their toxic bile against Canada.
Carney lies will come out soon. Give it time.
Carney is now just making excuses as he still has not delivered on his main campaign promise.
Anonymous “Carney’s detractors think that labeling him a liar means that their fantasies are true.”
He lied from Day 1 in the LPC nomination. He took credit from Jim Flaherty for the work done in 2008. And his first three policy announcements were lifted from Pollievre.
Anonymous. He failed. He spent a year antagonizing not negotiating behind the scenes like the other G7 countries did. That speech in Davos was pointless.
Most know Carney is a liar. We don’t believe him just like with the Gordie Howe bridge.
Canada is a great country. There’s not a bunch of inbred white people shooting up malls and schools every week like there is in the USA. Trust me I would know 😅

@Jay. Carney has failed on his promise to Canadians on getting a deal. Mr. Master Negotiator is a total flop and can’t get the job done.”
Carney is doing his job. He’s protecting the Canadian economy not the AMERICAN economy. Apparently you want Trump to walk away with best deal. You want the United States to come out on top not Canada. That doesn’t sound very Canadian to me. Then again you far-right don’t sound very Canadian at all these days do you…
@ Bob Kukucci – Carney’s detractors think that labeling him a liar means that their fantasies are true. Nothing is real to them except their own delusions.
Some opinions don’t deserve any consideration. They’re just noise.
Keep braying.
@Jay. Carney has failed on his promise to Canadians on getting a deal. Mr. Master Negotiator is a total flop and can’t get the job done.
The idiotic Conservatives would be kissing Trump’s dirty a$$ right now. Taking the worst deal and letting the the US take advantage of Canada. Good thing we have Carney to protect Canada from Trumps corrupt NAZl government
Clearly Anoymous at 9:17PM is a fool as he believes what Carney tells him. He thinks what Carney “says” is the truth.
Did Carney shows us the actual agreement. . I think he is a lair just like the Gordie Howe Bridge scandal.
@Anonymous. I am not your friend, buddy!
@Anonymous. So you believe Carney at his word? LoL He lied about the Gordie Howe Bridge deal. Carney can present the actual offer by the Americans for all to see.
@not anonymous. I’m not your buddy.
Carney promised a trade deal over a year ago. Now trade talks break down at the last moment and Carney walks away empty handed again. Carney skills as a negotiator were overblown and now he is making excuses on why he didn’t deliver for Canadians.
“Nothing to do with the Liberals.”
Sure thing buddy. Ask yourself why companies close shop in Canada yet survive elsewhere. Kleenex left citing a “constrained supply environment” and “unique market complexities’. Yet it exists elsewhere.
106,134 people left Canada permanently in 2024. This total marks the highest number of emigrants recorded by the country since 1967. That record was broken in 2025.
A July report by KPMG Canada revealed that 42 percent of surveyed Canadian manufacturers have moved or plan to move production to the US.
All the addle minded Carney haters on here need to go to Mark Carney’s Youtube channel find the following video:
LIVE: Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs • EN DIRECT : Notre réponse aux droits de douane américains
The Prime Minister explains the unworkable details in the press conference. For once actually DO your own research.
Most think Carney is.a liar already and this will even more compound it if he doesn’t show the full details of the trade deal. I personally believe the point of protecting Quebec culture and language is a total fabrication by Carney.
@not anonymous. All those companies are either retail or companies which amalgamated manufacturing. Nothing to do with the Liberals. Keep whining about Trudeau, the Liberals, etc. Most Canadians are sick of it and think the timing is unseemly. Listen to the US anthem to soothe yourself.
We are not supporting Trump. We are holding our government to account, especially after the Lost Liberal Decade where record numbers of Canadians emigrated from Canada and countless business closed up and also left Canada, Kleenex, Lowes, Hudson Bay, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, just to name a few.
@Not anonymous. I did hear that US citizens are way less educated than Canada and have trouble reading.
Anonymous, no the details were not leaked. Governments answer to the public. They don’t leak. They publish data.
Where is Poilievre’s security clearance? Some are asking if he can even get it with his slavish loyalty and fawning obsession to Trump.
Get a security clearance and maybe
@Not Cindy. The terms of the deal were leaked to the press. Take your Trumpian partisan blinders off. And instead of SUPPORTING Canada at this difficult time, you, like other Poilievre conservatives, SUPPORT the USA.
Cindy what details? Do you have any proof to any of that? Canadians deserve answers after 18 months of promises by Carney
Release the details? Pay attention, the 11th hour Lutnick came in and demanded that Canada trade only with the US, must ask for permission prior to discuss any trade with any other country, and must list what goods would be in consideration for prior US approval. That would make Canada financially the 51st state with an economic takeover. The con servatives need to sit down and button the pie hole.
The Canadians that distrust Carney are from a very loud and negative minority. They are isolated in their silo so they think that everyone agrees with them. Poilievre’s 18% favourable rating shows that contrary to their claims Carney is trusted by Canadians.
Unfortunately in this forum it’s not possible to tell if the cranks are Canadians or foreign disruptors spewing divisive nonsense from afar.
More divisive rhetoric from the conservatives. The terms were leaked already. The Poilievre conservatives LOVE Trump and are on the side of the USA. Unacceptable!
Both sides are liars, so trying to get to the truth is tough. So far when it comes to deals between the US and Canada, Carney has lied twice and the US didn’t. Not exactly a bastion of confidence…. 😒
How come the comments are turned off for the article about the NWT shooting suspect? Strange…. Oh wait they don’t fit the narrative
You trust Greer. What a idiot you are
We would have to get the details from Greer because Carney won’t release info on all the concessions he gave up before he changed his mind.
Carney had one job and he failed.
Carney was a coward? No. He took the hard way forward and didn’t cave like a cheap suit like the UK and EU. For the record, Carney has no credibility with you, but he has credibility with most Canadians. That’s on you, not Carney.
@Anonymous. As Canada will suffer tremendously that Carney walked away from the table like a coward, it is reasonable for him to show us the details. Unfortunately, Carney has lied previously and has no credibility
Its incredibly hard to take Carney’s word at face value when he’s lied to Canadians multiple times. I know. Let’s blame Pierre. 🥴
Details have already trickled out to the media. What purpose would this serve other than poisoning the chalice?
Poilievre’s approval rating will continue to fall if he continues to chisel away for purely partisan reasons. Even he must get tired of hearing his complaining. Opposition is much easier than governing.
There’s a couple of weeks for pressure to build on Trump to climb down. Releasing the workable details now would be counter productive.
Carney will need to show his homework otherwise most will think he is lying, just like with the Gordie Howe bridge.
Little baby PP refuses his RCMP clearance and expects to be briefed anyway?
Phuck off PP.
You are a sick joke having never had a job.
It’d fascinating that all these Carney cultists ignore that Carney has lied to Canadians multiple times. Seems they yearn for a dictatorship. 😳
The deal has already been released to the press. Yet again the Poilievre conservatives are playing outrageous politics. Just outrageous!
Leblanc told everyone on late Thursday the deal was close to being done. Friday Carney blows up the deal and brings in some fake story he is protecting Quebec language and culture. Whatever that is Personally I think Carney is a liar.
secrecy and no hard data… typical as NO crook ever wants their details public.
Anyone who believes a word Carney says needs their brain checked. He Iied from his very first day running to replace Trudeau. He took credit for the work done in 2008 by the late Jim Flaherty, because he knew that the role of monetary policy is trivial compared to fiscal policy.
His first three policy announcements were lifted directly from Pierre, reversing the carbon tax he himself had pushed for, canceling the planned change to Capital Gains, and housing under 1M dollars. All taken from Polliveire. He went on to win an election, all while the LPC used Trump as a boogeyman to suggest that Canadian Conservatives are somehow associated with American Conservatives.
Throughout all this Parliament was prorouged, the government was not having to face questions in the House. More importantly we had no one speaking to the incoming Trump administration. The federation of premiers led by Doug Ford had to assume that role.
All this because of Trudeau’s vanity and delaying our last election, thanks to the cover provided by Singh and the NDP. Carney as economic advisor to Trudeau turned away Germany and Japan from our LNG, yet now he chases those same deals.
Meanwhile over 100k Canadians moved away from Canada in 2024, a record number. The following year a new record was set of 120k. 40 percent of our Manufactures are actively planning a move to the USA as per KPMG. We import 70 percent of our food due to our climate. And we have Carney spending a year antagonizing the baby in the oval office with ‘middle power’ speeches, while the rest of the G7 got their trade deals signed.
The Lost Liberal Decade because we have voters who didn’t like Harper’s haircut, an Economist, and thought Trudeau, a drama teacher, had nice socks.
Jivani calling the counter tariffs an overreaction is disqualifying. Hard no.
The grown ups have got this.
If Carney was totally in the right to walk away then show the Canadian people exactly what he walked away. It’s just suspicious that everything was going great up to the last few hours so why not tell the Canadian people exactly what went wrong in writing.
No security clearance=phuck off PP
Get your first ever job
Maybe PP should get his security clearance from the RCMP if he wants to play.
After a week of hard work on his bad deal, Carney finally joined the Conservatives who didn’t want to accept a bad deal.
He said “put this on me” to the premiers but told the media it was Trump’s fault.
@Alison Redford.
First you are irrelevant. Second PP isn’t present at the trade talks. Only Carney and his Liberal cronies.
Carney needs to show the full details of the deal he waked away from citing the protection of Quebec culture and language Carney bootlicking Quebec for his own political gain.
JD Vance just said PP is a non-entity at trade talks. Who thinks he’s wrong.?
Only Danielle Smith
