Downtown Kelowna plan in works, presented to council Monday

A group of urban planners is attempting to create a long-term vision for downtown Kelowna in a short-term time frame: Monday, next week.

When a previous plan, the controversial CD 21 re-zoning proposition, was voted down, the City of Kelowna ventured to create a new, workable and affordable revitalization plan.

Experts have gathered to create the vision along with local stakeholders.

Most stakeholders want more people to live downtown to help keep the neighbourhood safe and vibrant.

"They wanted to see a more lively, active and economically sustainable downtown,” says Lance Berelowitz, a consultant with Urban Forum Associates, hired to participate in the revitalization meetings. “That means you do need to have residents who live downtown, who create the demand for the goods and services and for the businesses that would then thrive downtown.”

Meetings will continue until the plan is presented for public scrutiny on Saturday at Kerry Park.

The final plan for downtown Kelowna will be presented to City Council Monday.
