UPDATE: An engineering firm has been hired to assess the damage on the fallen exterior facade on the Ladner Leisure Centre. The weight room, cycle-fit studio, ice arena, and rear parking lot remain closed until further notice. All pools at the centre remain open under their normal hours of operation.

An exterior façade at the Ladner Leisure Centre fell down Thursday morning.
At approximately 10:30 a.m. the community centre’s facade “sustained damage” along the east side’s exterior when portions of the stucco collapsed, according to the George Harvie, chief administrative officer. Harvie said no one was hurt in the collapse, but damage is estimated to be about 1 million dollars.
The Corporation of Delta said there was no damage done to the inside of the building but that the facility’s weight room, fitness centre, arena and rear parking lot are closed. The pool, which is in a separate building, remains open.
The cause is not yet known.

“The structure and integrity of the building is still good,” said Harvie. “But the outside façade over the years, without any knowledge because there was no cracks evident before or anything, has deteriorated and rusted and those pinnings, separated during those high winds we had this morning.”
It is unknown how long the building will be closed for, but city officials said it will be about a week until they can give residents a timeline.
Engineers say the building is 46 years old.
