SASKATOON – As college tuition fees rise, apparently, so too are the number of University of Saskatchewan students looking for a “sugar daddy.”

According to the world’s largest sugar daddy dating website, SeekingArrangement.com, the U of S ranks 13th on the list of Canada’s fastest growing “sugar baby” schools with more and more students cashing in.

“It’s just a sign of the times, with college tuition rising to the point where the average Canadian student graduates with $37,000 worth of debt it makes perfect sense to date a sugar daddy,” said Leroy Velasquez, the website’s public relations manager.

In 2013, 78 U of S students signed up on the website.

“I’m shocked that if these statistics are true. I’m shocked that students are turning to this method pay for their tuition and other fees,” said Nour Abourhamra, USSU vice-president of student affairs.

Toronto’s York University topped the list followed by the University of Guelph and the University of Alberta.

Velasquez says they saw a 56 per cent increase in the number of college students signing up for a sugar daddy in 2013 and on average the “sugar babies” are receiving around $3,000 a month.

According to the website, there are 743 sugar daddies in Saskatoon who earn an average of $250,000 a year.

“There’s multi-millionaires, there’s men who make six figures it just really depends,” Velasquez said.

That could explain the attraction but it has the student union concerned.

“Just the fact that they are using a sugar daddy and what that imposes too, what are they giving in return for money,” Abourhamra said.

Canada has the second most “sugar daddy/sugar baby” relationships in the world, behind the United States.
