SASKATOON – More of Saskatchewan’s population will have access to influenza immunizations following the arrival of a shipment of FluMist vaccine.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has received a shipment of 107,000 doses of the nasal vaccine and has begun distributing it to health regions.

Starting Wednesday, Saskatchewan is expanding availability of FluMist to everyone between two- and 59-years-old. It is not recommended for pregnant women or immunocompromised persons.

FluMist contains the same influenza strains as this season’s injectable vaccine, including H1N1.

Remaining supplies of injectable vaccine will be made solely available to infants, pregnant women, persons with compromised immune systems and residents 60 and over.

More injectable vaccine is expected in early February.

“We are strongly encouraging everyone to get immunized against influenza,” said Dr. Khami Chokani, PAPHR’s medical health officer.
