REGINA – Mission Ridge Winter Park is finally open again after the bitterly cold temperatures forced staff to close up last weekend.

Single digit lows are ideal weather conditions for skiers and snowboarders. But overall, this season hasn’t been one for the books.

“We had no snow-making weather in November so that resulted in opening up late. Then we got nothing but snow-making weather right through December, but with the temperatures very low we made too much snow and had no one to ski on it,” said Don Williams, co-owner of Mission Ridge.

Typically around 35,000 people hit the slopes at Mission Ridge each year. So far, an estimated 3,000 people have made the trip, which means a loss in revenue.

“It affects what projects we do in the summer. We would love to have another chair lift but if the money doesn’t come in then we can’t do it,” said Williams.

The staff hopes these seasonal temperatures continue into the February break, so more people will strap on the skies, making up for what they’ve lost.
