Treacherous day on Southern Interior roads

RCMP reminding motorists to slow down after a deadly day on Southern Interior roads.

One person is dead and two others injured following a crash on Highway 97C southeast of Merritt Friday afternoon.

The vehicle apparently rolled down an embankment. Icy road conditions appear to have been a factor in the crash.

On the Okanagan connector, there were 15 crashes over a 6 hour span overnight.

The most recent crash happened Saturday morning near the Penaske Summit.

The SUV flipped over landing upside down. A mother and her two kids were in the vehicle at the time, but were injured.

“Up here in the mountains, the road conditions change so quickly that you can be more confident when its sunny out and drive a little faster. Some of the areas when you come upon the shade are nothing but ice and it causes people to lose control and that’s the situation we’re in today,” said Cpl. Steve Woodcox, of the West Kelowna RCMP.

Weather also played a factor in a two vehicle crash on Glenmore road and Kane road in Kelowna Saturday morning.

A white vehicle heading southbound on Glenmore road didn’t see a red light and drove through the intersection, smashing into the Suzuki sidekick heading eastbound on Kane road.

RCMP say the sun’s glare on the road distracted the motorist.
