A 57-year-old man is dead after a serious crash in Burnaby this morning.

It happened just before six this morning at the intersection of Canada Way and Rayside Avenue.

Police say a white GMC Jimmy had been traveling northwest in the curb lane approaching the intersection at Rayside Avenue.

A black Mazda MX3 2 door coupe was westbound on Rayside at the intersection.

The black Mazda was observed to pull out and proceeded to make a left turn, to go towards Burris Ave. The GMC Jimmy was said to be too close to be able to avoid the collision.

The Mazda was struck directly on the driver’s door.

The driver of the black Mazda was transported to Royal Columbian Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Both drivers were reported to have been wearing their seatbelts.

The driver of the GMC Jimmy was also transported to RCH but was not badly hurt.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Investigators say neither weather nor speed are considered to have been contributing factors.

Charges are not expected to be laid.

This is the seventh motor vehicle related fatality in Burnaby this year.
