A 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl are dead following a Wednesday afternoon rollover crash on a rural road in southern Alberta.
According to RCMP, emergency crews were called to the intersection of Township Road 292 and Range Road 14, approximately four kilometres west of the QEII highway, in Mountain View County shortly after 5 p.m.
RCMP officials say both teens, residents of the town of Didsbury, were pronounced dead at the crash site.
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, RCMP public information officer, says it appeared neither teen was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the rollover.
The RCMP investigation is underway, but Savinkoff said it’s believed there were no witnesses to the crash. Impairment and highway conditions are not considered to be factors.
“Initial investigation, we don’t believe alcohol was a factor,” Savinkoff told Global News. “We did have an analyst attend the scene and we’re doing an investigation into the other aspects of that collision including speed and so forth but we haven’t determined any kind of (excess) speed or anything at this time.
“The responding members indicated that the roads were really good. There was certainly no concerns with the roadway itself at this collision.”
The identities of the deceased have not been released but Savinkoff says the teens were not related.
