An area at Six Nations of the Grand River in the County of Brant was closed off to residents and traffic overnight following a shots fired complaint late Tuesday, according to Ontario’s police watchdog.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) says they’ve undertaken a police-involved shooting probe tied to a call around 11: 30 p.m. from a Chiefswood Road address between Fifth and Six Line in Ohsweken, Ont.
“Investigators are currently dealing with a barricaded individual that’s been discharging a firearm at police officers,” Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a social media post early Wednesday during the standoff.
“I’m glad to say right now there’s absolutely no injuries to report.”
SIU investigators say the 40-year-old man refused to exit a home as requested by police.
Six Nations Police called for assistance from two OPP detachments, including an emergency task force unit, as well as an aviation unit from York Police.
The man would be taken into custody and sent to hospital around 10:30 a.m. following an exchange of gunfire with the OPP after officers broke through the front door of the residence, says the SIU.
Seven investigators, including a forensic team, have been assigned to the case.
