Calgary Fire Department officials issued a warning Monday afternoon after a lithium-ion electric scooter battery exploded at a business in Bowness.

Firefighters were called to the 6300 block of Bowness Road Northwest at around 2:40 p.m. and were met by significant smoke emanating from the shop.

According to a CFD spokesperson, the explosion occurred as the owner of the business was returning inside after taking out some garbage.

The E-scooter battery had been charging when it exploded and burst into flames. The owner used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames and clear himself a way outside.

Crews extinguished the fire and removed the scooter from the building.

Several businesses were evacuated as a precautionary measure, as smoke from the fire had made its way into the neighbouring stores.

No injuries were reported in connection with the explosion and fire.

The building reopened once firefighters confirmed carbon monoxide levels posed no risk.

CFD officials released the following list of tips for safe use and storage of lithium-ion batteries:

  • Don’t use batteries that are swollen, dented, damaged, have an odour, have changed colour or are hot to the touch;
  • Transport batteries in a protective, non-metal case;
  • Store batteries in a dry location at room temperature;
  • Do not expose batteries to direct sunlight or in extreme heat or cold;
  • Do not overcharge batteries;
  • Charge batteries before they drop below a 30 per cent charge to improve their lifespan and don’t fully discharge them; and
  • Use the charger included with your device.
