Man dead, another wounded after shooting in downtown Hamilton

A man in his 30s is dead after a shooting in downtown Hamilton late Tuesday night.

Police say the local man was likely shot shortly before 11 p.m. as officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the area of Herkimer Street and Caroline Street South.

The victim, suffering from gunshot wounds, was found in an alley around the Durand neighbourhood.

He was transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Homicide detectives say another man was reported to have checked into a hospital with a similar gunshot wound around the same time as the fatal shooting.

Det. Sgt Sara Beck said police are seeking a royal blue four-door sedan, similar to a Honda Civic or Mazda 3 with dark tint, that fled the scene westbound on Markland Street at a high rate of speed.

Investigators have also recovered the handgun they believe was the weapon involved along with multiple shell casings at the scene.

Beck said homicide is treating the shooting of both men as “related” incidents and that they are looking at the possibility others may have been involved.

“We do believe that they are connected, to what level, to what degree and the circumstances of which, we are still investigating, ” Beck revealed.

The deceased was identified as Tito Kelly, 36, of Hamilton.

Police are appealing to homeowners and motorists in the area to check their cameras between the hours of 10:50 p.m. and 11 p.m. for images of the vehicle.
