The South African Cultural Association of British Columbia is hosting the Mandela Day Legacy Dinner and Dance on July 29, 2023, at the Russian Hall (600 Campbell Street, Vancouver), with special musical guest, Zahara. Zahara’s music is loosely classified as Afro-Soul, with her sound being compared to artists such as Tracey Chapman and India Arie. Singing in English and her native Xhosa, this sensational artist’s debut album Loliwe went platinum in just thirteen days. The music video of the titular song has garnered over 2.7 million views on Youtube. In 2019, she signed a history-making residency deal with the hotel and casino, Emperor’s Palace, performing at multiple venues in the company’s suite. Notably, Zahara was the last artist to give Mandela a private performance at his home in Qunu, Eastern Cape. Her moving musical tribute to the ex-South African president, alongside poet Mzakhwe Mbuli, was broadcast across South African screens, inspiring and comforting a nation as Mandela came to the end of his life. The performance still resonates both locally and globally as a reminder of the great man’s contribution and the shared responsibility to continue the work he started. Alongside the musical feast, a culinary one will also be on offer at the Mandela Day Legacy Dinner and Dance. Guests will be able to sample delicious South African flavours while enjoying a night of artistic excellence.
