From humble Vancouverites to critically acclaimed international musicians, Ariel Barnes and Heidi Krutzen return to British Columbia as the duo COULOIR on November 18, 2022 at 7:30 PM with the Vancouver Chamber Music Society. Formerly the principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera, Ariel Barnes was described as “the outstanding Canadian Cellist of his generation” by Maestro Bramwell Tovey. He is currently the 1st Solo Cellist of the Nuremberg Symphony. Heidi Krutzen’s “captivating”, “ravishingly colored”, “emotionally touching” harp playing has moved audiences from New York to Tokyo. She is the Principal Harp of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, one of the top orchestras in the world, and was previously the Principal Harp of the Vancouver Opera for 20 years. Together, COULOIR was awarded the honour of “2016 Artist of the Year” at the Western Canadian Music Awards for the release of their second recording, MAXWELL, MUHLY & COULOIR. This quintessential Canadian duo returns home with a diverse program including Close for Couloir, Op. 48 by living French-Canadian composer, Caroline Lizotte. Commissioned by Couloir, this premiered at the International Chamber Music Festival Ottawa in July 2013. Caroline Lizotte’s works for harp are celebrated and performed around the world and are listed among the most influential works for harp repertoire in the late 20th and 21st centuries. Born in Québec City, she graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec in 1992 and studied at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester NY. Since 2010, Caroline Lizotte is a professor of harp at the Université de Montréal. The Vancouver Chamber Music Society is thrilled to invite COULOIR back to British Columbia at the South Delta Baptist Church. Tickets are $20-$40 available online, by phone, or at the door. Program: Claude Debussy – Cello Sonata Caroline Lizotte – Close for couloir, Op. 48 Manuel de Falla – Suite Populaire Espagnole Kitka – Don’t Excite the Recollection
