For the second year in a row, Global Calgary will be virtually partnering with four charities over the holidays as part of its Month of Giving campaign. Please help support these charities during December as they continue to uplift and care for our community.
Parachutes for Pets
Parachute for Pets provides pet food and vet care for those who cannot afford to take care of their beloved pets. They support low-income seniors, veterans, kids in foster care or those fleeing domestic violence whose only constant companion is their pet. Global Calgary’s Month of Giving will help support Parachute for Pets as they distribute Christmas hampers for pets and help with vet care.
Kerby Centre
The Kerby Shelter provides a safe place for seniors to call home while escaping financial, physical and emotional abuse. The Shelter has been running at 99% capacity this past year and has had to turn away 370 vulnerable seniors in need. The two most significant issues that arose during the pandemic for seniors are isolation and food insecurity. Global Calgary’s Month of Giving will help the Kerby Centre expand its Christmas Hamper program to deliver bigger hampers to more seniors, showing this hard-hit population that the community cares.
YMCA Y Mind
The YMCA Y Mind is a free program through the YMCA that is available to any youth ages 13 – 18 and young adults ages 18 – 30 experiencing mental health issues. It’s a 7-week program teaching coping skills to deal with anxiety and depression. 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a diagnosable mental health disorder in their lifetime, with anxiety and depression being the most prevalent. The pandemic has exacerbated mental health disorders for everyone, particularly teens. Hospitals are seeing a significant increase in the number of young people experiencing mental health crises. Helping this population build some tools for resilience will help them now and in the future.
Calgary Food Bank
For the second year, Global Calgary’s Month of Giving will be helping the Food Bank serve its ever-increasing demand. The Calgary Food Bank is the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank in Calgary, serving families, individuals, and organizations. As the pandemic continues, more and more families turn to the Food Bank to help with basic needs.
