Relay For Life is a global movement to end cancer which is active in 29 countries and 6,000 communities worldwide. Across Canada, Relay for Life Youth events unite students in this movement to make a difference by fundraising in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Together, we are bigger than cancer. Many of us at Oakville Trafalgar High School have been directly touched by cancer and participating in Relay For Life Youth offers us the chance to create hope for those living with and moving past cancer.
Mila Gracic is a student at our school who knows too well the devastating impact cancer has on Canadians: Cancer is a disease that changes family dynamics and affects people’s perspectives. Her family has been affected by cancer through her mom’s experience with breast cancer and losing her aunt and family friends to cancer.
However, Mila believes cancer is also able to bring people closer together. People are able to sympathize and work together towards a common goal which benefits society. She tries to help others by volunteering at St. Michael’s Hospital, raising awareness for cancer-related issues and joining our school’s Relay For Life. By participating in Relay for Life and raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, Mila is able to make a positive difference in society and help bring people together to celebrate the courageous people living with and moving past the disease.
To date, our school has raised more than $917,000 in support of our Relay For Life Youth over the last 10 years. This year our goal is to meet our target of $300,000 and need your help to do so. Event day media coverage will help us with our fundraising efforts.
Every step we will take at Relay will help fund ground-breaking research on all cancers, advocate to make healthy living easier and support Canadians affected by the disease.
