Road Rules: Following too close

CALGARY- One of the most dangerous things a driver can is follow too closely behind the vehicle in front of them—especially in the winter. Not only can it result in someone getting rear-ended, but could also lead to a hefty fine.

The Traffic Act states drivers cannot follow another vehicle closer than is reasonable, based on speed and road conditions.

“No matter how good you think you are as a driver, you need two things to avoid a collision. You need time and space,” explains Ron Wilson from the Alberta Motor Association. “Without that space, you’re not going to have enough time if something happens in front of you.”

A good rule of thumb is the three second rule. When the vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, it should take you three seconds to pass it.

Not only is following too close a hazard, but it also restricts your vision.

“A little bit of common sense goes a long way when the driving conditions are not as great,” adds Cst. Jim Lebedeff from the Calgary Police Traffic unit. “Please adjust your distance and adjust your reaction time too, because along with road conditions comes reaction times.”

The fine for following a vehicle too closely is $172 and four demerit points.
