TORONTO – Global News has learned the car in which police found an “incendiary device” had been rented from a Brampton auto shop a couple of weeks ago.
Police detonated the device in Toronto’s entertainment district early Tuesday morning.
The owner of the auto shop, who didn’t want his name used, told Global News he didn’t feel good about renting the white sedan to the man. He refused to say why he felt uncomfortable.
Police found the suspicious package in a white sedan around 3 a.m. Tuesday following a vehicle stop near King Street and Peter Street.
Two men in the vehicle were taken into custody and transferred to 14 Division for questioning. No charges have been laid.
Police said the incident could be connected to a two-week long arson investigation.
“We had some officers that had been working diligently over the night to stop these arsons that have been happening in 14 Division,” said Toronto police Sergeant Jeff Zamut.
The area surrounding the car was closed to traffic for several hours as the Toronto police bomb squad unit investigated.
The area around King Street and Peter Street reopened around 8:30 a.m.
