SIU investigates fatal police shooting in Scarborough

The Ontario Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is probing the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Pickering man in Scarborough on Sunday afternoon.

Reyal Hensen Jardine-Douglas was shot multiple times during an attempted arrest by Toronto Police on Victoria Park Avenue, just north of Eglinton Avenue.

Two officers followed a TTC bus travelling southbound on Victoria Park Avenue around 3 p.m., according to police. Officers eventually ordered the bus to pull over and Mr. Douglas to exit.

“There was an interaction between Mr. Douglas and Toronto Police,” said Monica Hudon, a spokesperson for SIU. “After Mr. Douglas exited the bus he was shot more than once. He was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 p.m.”

Several people witnessed the “interaction” between Police and Mr. Douglas. No further details were released by Ms. Hudon as the shooting is under investigation.

One man in the area told the National Post they heard at least four shots.

The SIU, under the Police Services Act, must investigate police actions that result in serious injury, death or incidents of sexual assault. Any results of the investigations are presented to the Ontario Attorney General.
