Laval teen held in Fairview Mall jewel heist

MONTREAL – A 19-year-old Laval resident will be held in custody until a bail hearing scheduled for Tuesday in connection with the weekend robbery at a jewelry store on the West Island.

Steven Joseph appeared briefly before a judge at the Montreal courthouse, where he faces 11 charges in all. The charges are related to the robbery inside the Birks store at the Fairview Mall in Pointe Claire.

Four men entered the store Saturday morning and sprayed people with pepper spray before smashing display counters and making off with jewelry.

Joseph is charged with the armed assault of eight people, conspiracy to rob the store with four other people and two counts related to carrying a weapon and pepper spray.
