AUDIO: Did Toronto Mayor Rob Ford call a local radio station to defend himself?

Listen: Here’s the full audio from AM640.

TORONTO – Did Toronto Mayor Rob Ford call a local radio station using a fake name to defend himself against Thursday’s revelations? That’s what one AM640 host thinks.

Bill Carroll, who hosts the afternoon drive segment on AM640, is “90 to 95 per cent” certain that a supposed Rob Ford defender who called during the radio program and identified himself as “Ian from Etobicoke” was in fact the mayor himself.

“I’ve met the mayor many times, I know him pretty well, I have interviewed him on the show many times…this guy, if he’s not the mayor he could play one on the radio,” Carroll said to AM640’s Jeff McArthur.

The pair asked the caller if the mayor had anything to answer for just hours after Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair acknowledged investigators have a video of the mayor that’s “consistent” with media reports.

“I don’t think he has to answer to anything, it’s personal problems,” the caller said.

The host and caller exchanged barbs for a few minutes before Carroll questioned the caller’s identity.

“Sorry, what was your name?” the caller asked Carroll.

“This is Bill,” Carroll replied. “Is this Rob Ford?”

The caller continued to talk over Carroll, who pushed for a response when questioned again about the caller’s identity.

“Who am I talking to right now….mayor Ford? Mayor Ford I know your voice. This is you isn’t it mayor Ford?”

That’s when the call ended.

It is unclear when the call was made. Carroll’s show airs 4 to 7 p.m.

Ford was seen out with his kids as they went trick-or-treating early Thursday evening.

The mayor’s brother Councillor Doug Ford called AM640 Friday morning, saying it wasn’t the mayor who called Carroll Thursday night.

“It took me a half a second to realize that’s not Rob on the radio,” Ford told Mike Stafford. “That is not Rob 100 per cent, he was out trick-or-treating with his kids last night.”
