World premiere of Liberace musical ‘All That Glitters’ set for Toronto

Richard Kline will star as Liberace in 'All That Glitters' in Toronto next fall. Handout

TORONTO – A musical about the life and loves of Liberace will have its world premiere next fall in Toronto before opening on Broadway.

All That Glitters – described as “an unauthorized biography of a ground-breaking legend” — stars Richard Kline as the flamboyant Vegas showman.

Kline, 69, is best known for playing womanizing Larry Dallas on the sitcom Three’s Company from 1977 to 1984.

Two other actors will play Liberace – one as a 10-year-old piano prodigy in Milwaukee and one as a 20-something pianist on the cusp of fame. Kline takes over the role as Liberace meets Scott Thorson – a relationship chronicled earlier this year in the critically acclaimed HBO movie Behind the Candelabra.

All That Glitters is directed and choreographed by Alexander DeJong, who co-wrote the musical with James A. Walsh and Tom Nelson. Costumes for the show were designed by Bob Mackie.

Four workshop performances of the musical were staged at New York’s Baryshnikov Arts Center over a year ago. Rehearsals for the Toronto debut will take place next summer.

Producers hope to open All That Glitters on Broadway in the 2014-15 season.

Liberace died in 1987 of complications from AIDS. He was 67.
