James Christians arrested 3 days after double stabbing

CALGARY- Three days after a double-stabbing that left his estranged wife dead and her friend seriously injured, James Christians has been arrested.

55-year-old Carmel Leah Christians was killed on Wednesday morning, after being attacked as she left for work. Her friend was rushed to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police launched a manhunt for Christians’ 65-year-old husband James, who was considered armed and dangerous.

Last month, he was charged with assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, in regards to an incident with Carmel. He was released on bail two days later, but an order of protection was put in place.

James Christians was finally taken into custody around 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon, at a gas station near Mount Royal University at 37 St. and Richmond Road S.W.

Watch: Calgary Police S/Sgt. Grant Miller on Christians’ arrest.

“Two of our uniformed patrol officers were patrolling in that area. They came across his truck, recognized the vehicle, and approached him as he was getting out. He was arrested without incident,” explains S/Sgt. Grant Miller. “He did not resist, was not combative.”

Miller adds that they are now trying to determine where Christians was for the last three days.

“We have had calls from the public and potential sightings for where he has been. At this time we’re not sure where he’s been for the past few days.”

Christians now faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
