Typhoon Wipha heading toward Tokyo

TORONTO – Strong waves and winds are being felt in eastern Japan as Typhoon Wipha heads across the Pacific Ocean.

The Japan Times reported that Wipha is the strongest typhoon to reach Tokyo in 10 years.

Typhoon Wipha is producing sustained winds of about 130 km/h with gusts of 185 km/h and moving toward the northwest at 46 km/h.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has already issued warnings across the country in preparation for the storm’s arrival. Japan Airlines and other airline operators in the Pacific have grounded planes.

Waves of up to 12 metres are expected in some areas.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued across most of the country including Fukushima, the location of the Dai-ichi nuclear power plant that suffered damage during the magnitude-9 earthquake in 2011.

The Japan Times reported that the Tokyo Electric Power Co. was bracing for the storm and suspended all off-shore work.
