Almost all of the dogs abandoned at a New Westminster and Richmond animal shelter have now been adopted out to new homes.

In late August, 50 dogs were dumped outside the two shelters overnight – 38 dogs in Richmond and 12 dogs in New Westminster.

Most of the dogs were well-fed and cared for, and there are only a few still waiting for their forever homes. It is unknown where they came from.

The Richmond Animal Protection Society received more than 150 applications to adopt the dogs once the story became known. City spokesperson Ted Townsend said “there was really a lot of strong response almost immediately.”

He said all but nine dogs have now been adopted, and those ones are spending a little more time at the shelter to socialize more with the other dogs. However, Townsend said due to the overwhelming support he is not concerned once those dogs are ready to be homed, they will have any trouble finding good owners.

The Richmond Society also received quite a few donations, and Townsend wanted to thank the public for their support as it cost more than $12,000 to take care of the abandoned dogs.

“The biggest part of it is vet fees,” he said. “We are very fortunate [the shelter] has a very strong core of volunteers.”

Out of the 12 dogs abandoned at the New Westminster Animal Shelter, four of them are still waiting to be homed.

“We just haven’t found suitable homes,” said New Westminster city spokesman Sukh Maghera. They have also had a lot of inquires and have been flooded with community support for the dogs.
