Canada spending $3B over five years on nine maternal health programs

NEW YORK – Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the world needs more than just rhetoric when it comes to improving the lives of mothers and newborn children.

Harper tells a United Nations panel on maternal and child health that action is necessary in order to save lives.

The prime minister says Canada has committed nearly $3 billion over five years to nine projects chosen to deliver maternal and child health programs.

Harper also says Canada will host an international meeting next year to ensure program providers are accountable for the money they spend.

Harper spoke to the UN panel today after meeting privately with Bill and Melinda Gates, calling the foundation that bears their names a great partner for Canada.
