More than a dozen people injured after deck collapses in Halifax area

HALIFAX – About 15 people were injured early today, three of them seriously, after a deck collapsed in the Halifax area during a birthday party.

Police, fire officials and paramedics were called to Green Village Lane in Dartmouth around 1:30 a.m.

Investigators say numerous people were on the deck when it collapsed four metres to the ground.

About 15 people were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from cuts to fractures.

Three people are in serious condition.

A neighbour says she heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion. Julie Smeele called 911 after she saw what had happened.

“I looked around the corner and there was 18 people lying on the ground and everyone was lying down and everyone was screaming and everyone was crying and it was just a horrifying sight,” said Smeele.

“There was a guy who looked like he hit his head, I’m not sure if he did but there was a lot of blood and it didn’t seem like he was responding to anyone, and there was two other girls that looked like they were in really terrible shape as well.”

Police say the cause of the accident is under investigation.
