Katz denies pamphlet is election related

WINNIPEG — Mayor Sam Katz has mailed out thousands of pamphlets called the “State of the city report” but denies the rosy assessment of his administration is setting the stage for a re-election run in 2014.

The glossy eight-page brochures started appearing in residents’ mailboxes this week and sing the praises of progress made in a number of areas, from a new facility for the police K-9 unit (including pictures of puppies) to new bike and pedestrian paths.

Katz told reporters Wednesday morning the document cost $28,000 to produce, not including postage. The money comes from taxpayer-funded budgets at city hall and he laughed off suggestions the pamphlets are meant to butter up voters.

Katz has yet to confirm he will run for re-election in 2014.

“Information is always shared with the public by the media,” Katz said. “Sometimes there are different perspectives, so we’re just getting as much factual information out there as possible.”

Katz said he has mailed out similar pamphlets in past years. The next civic election is in October 2014.
