HALIFAX – NDP mailouts funded by Nova Scotians are raising the ire of the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives who say taxpayers have no business funding partisan ads, but Premier Darrell Dexter says his party has done nothing wrong.

The mailouts are emblazoned with the NDP caucus logo and tout government accomplishments over the past four years.

Dexter says the mailouts were cleared with the Speaker’s Office and sent out before the election was called Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Dexter says it cost $40,000 to print and deliver the mailouts to 220,000 households across the province.

Tory Leader Jamie Baillie says the New Democrats were clearly planning for an election campaign before the mailouts were distributed, calling their actions “wrong.”

Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil says the NDP is trying to skirt the rules.
