Police find alligator in St. Vital home

WINNIPEG – A 60-centimetre alligator was found in a St. Vital home on Wednesday.

Police found the American alligator after they responded to a tip. Under the Responsible Pet Ownership bylaw, it is illegal to have an alligator in Winnipeg.

The owner voluntarily surrendered the animal.

American alligators can grow longer than 4.5 metres and weigh as much as 1,000 pounds as adults, police said.

American alligators live in the wilds in southern U.S. states such as Florida, Louisiana and Texas.

Winnipeg animal services is looking for a home for the alligator at an accredited zoo, police said.
