Edmonton – An Edmonton woman has been charged with murder in the death of her husband.
52-year-old Nyuk Hwang has been charged with second-degree murder after an autopsy on Teck Hwang’s body revealed he died of “blunt drastic trauma.”
EPS Homicide Staff Sergeant Bill Clark says during his career as a homicide detective, he’s never had a medical examiner list “blunt drastic trauma” as a cause of death.
“It was described by the Medical Examiner as just a very severe beating type injuries.”
Police were called to the couple’s north Edmonton home Sunday evening. According to Edmonton police, officers responded to an apparent domestic disturbance at a home at 84 Street and 160 Avenue in the Belle Rive neighbourhood at around 10 p.m.
Police say officers found a Teck Hwang in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the home.
Hwang was taken to hospital by EMS, where he died at around 3 a.m. Monday.
“This is a classic case of domestic violence, one which we don’t normally, I guess, probably, hear of in the news, where it’s a wife, in this case, beating on the husband. Usually it’s the other way around,” says Clark.
Clark wouldn’t discuss the details of the injuries, but he did say an object was used during the incident.

Nyuk Hwang was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm in 2008, in which, she served a three week sentence.
The couple has a teenage son who was home at the time of the incident. He’s in contact with children’s services. Clark says the son is obviously traumatized.
Next door neighbour Sue Pratap says she heard arguing coming from her neighbour’s home Sunday night.
“I was watching a movie, then I went to the washroom, and then I heard an argument. Then I said to (my) husband, ‘maybe they’re talking loud or something like that,’ because it was through the window and I couldn’t hear what the argument was about.”
Pratap describes her neighbours as friendly. She says she’s had a good relationship with the family since they moved into their home about nine years ago.
“He’s a very quiet guy, and all the time he would meet me, and then I would say hi, and then he’d say hi, how are you, that’s all. I never used to, but the wife I used to talk to her all the time.”
Nyuk Hwang’s first court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
