MONTREAL – Canada’s foreign affairs minister is joining his international counterparts in calling for Syrian authorities to allow unfettered access to the site of last week’s alleged chemical attacks.
John Baird had separate phone conversations with his counterparts in the United States and France this weekend regarding the crisis in Syria. He spoke to the British Foreign Minister on Friday.
Officials in Baird’s office say the ministers shared their outrage about this past week’s events in Syria, especially the purported use of chemical weapons.
The UN says it has reached an agreement with Syria to allow a team of international experts to visit the site – but the time and date of the visit haven’t been finalized.
Ministers agreed that the delay in allowing inspectors and the bombardment of the affected areas has likely impaired the UN’s ability to assign responsibility.
Baird says Syrian President Bashar Assad’s credibility is already low and that anything short of full compliance with the UN’s demands would be unacceptable.
