Lone male trashes Bella Bella’s only school, causing thousands in damages

RCMP say a lone male suspect broke into Bella Bella’s only school overnight and went on a rampage, causing an estimated $25,000 in damages.

UPDATE: Mounties initially reported the damages to be estimated at $100,000, however that number has now dropped.

The Bella Bella Community School has been under construction for the past year and was only weeks away from completion.

It’s the only school in Bella Bella and houses students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. 170 students attend the school and there are 56 staff members.

Police say that once the suspect was inside, he smashed TVs, smart boards, computers and interior and exterior windows. The suspect also dumped paint on the floors and on computers.

“The community is in shock and the children are visibly upset over this senseless act of violence,” says Cst. Lesley Smith in a press release.

This latest incident comes only five weeks after a fire destroyed the community’s only grocery store.

RCMP say they are continuing to investigate and viewing the school’s surveillance video. Anyone with information is asked to call Bella Bella RCMP at (250) 957-2388.
