REGINA – Ada Bennett started at the Regina Farmers Market in May 2007. When she opened her first market, there were 18 vendors on the street. By the end of that summer, the market grew to 38 vendors. That was just the beginning of a growing interest in locally grown produce.
“It’s like a weekly festival that people come to with their families,” said Adrienne Sklar, owner of Pixie Winkle.
This week, the market hit a mile stone – a record-breaking 71 vendors from across Saskatchewan are selling local products, organic and ethnic foods, flowers and arts and crafts.
“I’m really proud of our market,” said Bennett. “We’ve done a number of markets over 60 since June.”
The market runs Wednesday and Saturdays, but not all vendors make it both days. If they all were to come on one day, organizers say there would be over 80 vendors.
“That’s pretty incredible, that makes it really one of the biggest markets in Saskatchewan,” said Bennett.
For many of the vendors at the Regina Farmers Market, passion is their main ingredient.
“I love doing it, when you love doing something it’s not like a job,” said Cynde Flaten, owner of Scandinavian Sweetheart.
