A group of homeless Winnipeggers are banding together to keep each other safe.

Earlier this week they set up a small tent city along Main Street, near Higgins Avenue. The group says it’s easier to ward off violence and theft in higher numbers.

Winnipeg’s police information office would not comment on the specifics of this incident but tell Global News their policy is to monitor situations like these and only take action if public safety is at risk.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“If tent are being erected in the area and spikes are being driven into the ground,” says Const. Jason Michalyshen. “If there is an environment that is becoming unsafe or potential hazards for other members of the public, we certainly need to look into it.”

Most of the people say they spent the last few days in the open space because they had no where else to go.

“The shelter only has so room for so many people and once its full, its full,” says Michel Ross, who was tenting in the area. “We need more shelters, more low income housing and better rates for welfare.”
