TORONTO – There is quicksand in southern Ontario. In fact, there’s quicksand almost anywhere there is a river or creek.
Dr. Lindsay Schoenbohm, a geologist with the University of Toronto, said in an interview with Global News Monday that the ground can become “super-saturated” with the water flowing underneath it and the water will push the sand grains apart causing it to become unstable.
But as with most things, it’s not like it appears in the movies: Most quicksand in Ontario is only a few feet deep and drowning in it is highly unlikely.
