A B.C. resident has captured video of another cougar swimming in the waters around Vancouver Island.
On August 5, Trevor Gillette was making his way to Fair Harbour, on the west side of Vancouver Island, when he spotted something swimming in the water.
He was with his boss and his wife, and they first thought it was an otter swimming around.
However, as they got closer, they realized it was a cougar.
Gillette took out his camera to capture the moment on video.
“When the cougar got out of the water it was tired,” he said, “and I don’t think any of us were scared. It was just a cool experience.”
In late July, a group out on a fishing expedition spotted a fast swimming cougar in the water near Tahsis.
B.C. Conservation Officer David Cox says swimming is a very common behaviour of cougars because they’re territorial, and often search for new areas to inhabit and new sources of prey.
However, it is rare for people to see them and even more rare to see them swim.
