WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Parking Authority has cancelled the renewal of annual parking permits on any street that has a meter in an attempt to create spaces for downtown businesses’ customers.
The parking permits, which cost $25 per year, allowed residents to park anywhere in the area with no time restrictions.
Randy Topolniski, chief operating officer of the parking authority, said the change affects approximately 130 Exchange District residents, who were given a year’s notice. The $25 permits expire at the end of August.
Cancelling the permits will clear up much-needed street parking for businesses, Topolniski said. Most of the condominium and apartment residents have parking already, he added.
The WPA is rolling out a new pilot program for Exchange residents who haven’t secured parking spots.
The program will offer $100-a-month permits to park for two hours per day in high-demand areas and for 24 hours per day on low-demand streets.
