Watch: Former police officer analyzes streetcar shooting video

Watch: Former Toronto police investigator Ross McLean analyzes the video of the Sammy Yatim shooting.

TORONTO – Video capturing the intense and fatal altercation between Sammy Yatim and several Toronto police officers showcases several questions that SIU officers will have to answer during their investigation.

Story continues below

Yatim, 18, was shot multiple times by a Toronto police officer shortly after midnight on Friday while alone on the 505 Dundas Street West streetcar.

Using footage of the standoff captured by a nearby witness, former Toronto police investigator and security expert Ross McLean walks through each striking moment of the video and raises questions about what Yatim was doing and how police responded.

While McLean says the video will be invaluable to police officers, it won’t answer everything.

“Because we don’t know everything yet. There’s certain things videos can confirm for you and tell you, number of shots, time, those sort of things but it doesn’t give you all the story,” McLean said adding that video from the streetcar will answer more questions.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating and as named Constable James Forcillo as the “subject officer” in the case.

Yakim’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday morning.
