Demonstration underway to protest public consultation for East Van bike lane

A demonstration has sprung up this morning to protest the last of a public consultation about a Union Street bike lane in East Vancouver.

This was one of three bike lane projects approved by the city of Vancouver this summer.

But some of the residents on Union Street say they were not properly consulted about the bike lane, and that work has started on the project already when the decision has not officially passed.

“We feel as a multi-community group that we haven’t been consulted,” said Elana Zysblat, from the Strathcona Residents Association. “We feel that the plan is rushed, there’s a lot of issues that weren’t considered, and first and foremost, if this is part of the 2014 transportation plan, page 70 of their own plans, says that you must absolutely consult with all impacted stakeholders.”

She said this plan will impact all of their lives.

Hundreds of cyclists are also expected to show up at City Hall today to speak about Point Grey Road bike lane.

The issue on that table is whether to turn Point Grey Road, west of MacDonald, into a street for local traffic and cyclists only.

Supporters say the road will be much safer for cyclists. But opposition is strong as commuters are concerned other streets will become too congested due to the diverted traffic.
